Dear Jim: A long overdue update

Dear Jim: A long overdue update.

Haven’t been very active since this depressing  winter eliminated all activities that produce any fun in our day to day.

However, two new items have arrived in the spirit of my  rapidly downward rush to being completely useless.

My company no longer provides travel medical insurance so off I went to buy a policy for Sally and me.

I thought this would take an hour or so and so with the help of Chat GPT I got a list of all the providers and proceeded to make an application.

The first company was excited to hear from me, and we spent an hour going through all the health history of both of us. At that time the agent said,  “Great, I will now calculate a quote for you. First though, what is your date of birth?” I told her and she said,” you must be confused”. Nope that’s it…kind of close to WW2 I know but that’s it.

Well, she says, we only insure up to age 74. I had no idea you were still working if you are as old as you say. I replied, I am only 74 plus a few months. Can you  make an exception?

HA!!

Finally, after many attempts with other companies, most of which are still laughing at my request, I found one that would insure both of us with several  exclusions.

After explaining our past and  current history and our in-depth knowledge of every hospital and lab in the province, they reluctantly  agreed to provide us with the policy.

With the exclusions for Sally, she will only be covered while travelling if we get hit by a slow-moving self -driving automobile and break  her right ankle. There is of course a substantial deductible and everything else is excluded based on history.

I contemplated, for Sally, an action plan while travelling that wouldn’t require insurance but she wouldn’t go for it. If anything happened to her, I would remove all forms of identification and drop her off at the emergency door. If she was unconscious, all the better.

She would later claim amnesia, but  they would treat her.  When she was better, she could sneak out of the hospital and Le Voila. Good as new...  I have always been good at thinking out of the box. My back up plan was to travel alone and face-time Sally with the good parts of the trip. Not perfect but works for me.

My second problem comes from being accused of not hearing well. The complaint was so vigorous I was on the verge of reporting Elder Abuse and getting a restraining order.

In my defense, if someone is talking all the time as they move from room to room it would take an act of extraordinary ,continuous concentration ,to keep focus for the never ending extended soliloquies.  I made note of the fact  that at least half of the talking was to the cat and I wasn’t  even meant to understand.

As I thought this through, I realized I don’t have a hearing problem, I have a Caring problem.!!  I also noted that saying “What”? often is a good chance to smoothly get back into the conversation.

So, smarty pants that I am, I am ordering fake hearing aids. This way I can profess to be doing the best I can and ask for patience and understanding. Why don’t I just get real hearing aids you say? Well, I tried them once and frankly I didn’t like all the things I began to hear so I gave them back!

These age-related revelations have got to stop as I need to have a perfect life. No more problems please and if you have any pull, up there, see if you can get a free pass for age 80  onward in recognition of traumas that occurred before. That way we could stop worrying and have a great time.

Will keep you posted and by the way you never did send me a sign that all was good up there. I’m beginning to think you and your Nun sister wasted a good part of your life perpetuating a scam. I’m giving you one more chance!

Regards,

Bill

Dear Jim: Where are you?

 Dear Jim:

Well, I haven’t been writing since you still  haven’t reached out to me as you promised when you passed 3 years ago. Bragging about having a NUN for a sister was supposed to give you privileges but sending me a sign obviously isn’t one of them .  I am going to try and give you an update anyway to show I haven’t given up on you.

First, on a health report I am pleased to say that I now have a doctor who doesn’t believe in testing old people. My blood tests used to take so many vials that I was dizzy for three days. Now I could get more blood from a mosquito bite than they need to do my tests.

His theory, unspoken, is that if they detect something going on  but it isn’t yet visible to the naked eye,  what is the point of finding it. Tests are expensive and he never read the results when we were doing a deep dive,  so it was all a waste of time. His conversation goes along the line of “ if it is serious we will see it and then watch it and its probably no sense treating it at your age anyway so have a good time. My 6-month scrubbings are now replaced by “ come and see me again in a year or so. “

I must say it is  a very stress-free way of living old.

On the social scene, I am not taking on any new friends or acquaintances as I don’t have time for the ones I have now. Although I recently had an opening when someone who I thought was a friend turned out to be anything but. May not fill it though.

Although we are redoing our entire back yard for reasons beyond my comprehension , I have had to point out that we haven’t had friends for dinner on the deck in 3 years. Parties at the club etc. have dwindled dramatically and we are too lazy to go downtown for dinner.

So, I guess the description of our day to day would  include the word “recluse”.

Now I know you want an update on my golf game.

This year I signed up for private, weekly lessons to rebuild my 40-year-old golf swing from the bottom up. Every aspect that I thought we would keep was inspected and rejected.

So now I have 14 swing thoughts to incorporate in my new swing that takes roughly 1.5 seconds to complete.

My body and brain are completely confused. When I brush my teeth, I find I am holding by elbow close to my body. I sleep in the fetal position with my weight 60/40on the right side of my body. I keep my head slightly  tilted to the right and steady 24 hours a day. Walking down the street I swing my arms to drop, sweep and raise to the sky every 30 steps or so.

Now ,when I’m golfing my brain is saying WTF are you doing this time. Old swing, new swing or some Frankenstein moves that I haven’t seen before.

I now get a good one 2 or 3 times a round and in between I lose at least 6 balls per round. My  partners turn their back on  every shot, so they won’t pick up any of my new moves.

So, you ask how has your score improved?  Well in a nutshell I pray every time I tee it up that  this time, I will break a 100 . When I put my scores into the handicap system, I get a message saying please only post one game at a time. ALL  the girls have lower handicaps than me …you get the picture. I am not discouraged at all and I can hardly wait for my next lesson.

I am devoting my  life to this game…what is left of it.

Will keep you posted.

Dear Jim: XMAS 2024

Dear Jim: Another crummy XMAS done with.

I was expecting some sign from you, having a NUN for a sister and all that time you spent at Church but…Crickets…

The California gang stayed away. They are too smart for this. The Montreal Contingent  showed up for Dinner on XMAS day.  Only 9 people but felt like 19. Ages 4 to 93. Great conversation all around.

Sally spent 3 days preparing the dinner. It was gone in 8 minutes. I took the power hose out of the garage and cleaned the kitchen for 3 hours.

I thanked everyone for coming to the last family dinner at our house. (They missed the subtlety). And when they left Sally, and I shouted at the retreating cars “Never again”.

Sally retreated to the bedroom where she remains, now 2 days later. She should recover in a week or so. If she stays sick, I hope she can drive so that she can head to Emergency for tests.

I gave Sally a new Furnace and Heat Pump for XMAS. Ours bit the dust Xmas eve. Fortunately, we have two and now we have one half the house a sauna and the other requires ski jackets and gloves. The cat is having a nervous breakdown.

She gave me a new Wall Oven that apparently any Bozo can run. Turns out none of the Bozo’s in our family could figure it out and a rather cold dinner was finally served close to my bedtime. We broke a few accessories and now I am on hold putting in a service call.

I reminded Sally that this was a very special XMAS for her. I got her a new basement floor, new stairs, new furnace and heat pump, fixed the many scrapes on her car, almost a new painting and carpet for the living room. What more could she ask for? I’m waiting to find out. Her Birthday is coming Jan 12. Pressure.

At any rate, boring is not a strong enough word I find. Time with Family is highly overrated. I spent yesterday searching for a Barbados rental for two next year...and we won’t be telling anyone where we are as an XMAS surprise.

At any rate I hope you had a good time and maybe you could make our lights flicker or something to let me know that you are feeling my pain.

All the best

Dear Jim: Do they use the term "Shit Show" where you are?

Dear Jim: Is the term “Shit Show” used up there?

People ask me how I am. I usually say, great thanks. Let me fill you in on the last 10 days.

It all started with a Biblical rainstorm.

On the way home I hit a pothole and blew a $963 tire and damaged the rim. Ok, it happens!

Next morning I go to our gym in the basement and notice a little puddle in the middle of the floor. Now how did that water get there. No clues.

I called a contractor who came and began drilling holes in our beautiful basement floor to see where the water was. None…now I have holes everywhere on the new segment of the basement.

Hang on, here is some water in this obscure room discovered when another hole was cut. Ok rip out that half of the finished basement. And what about that crack  in the foundation. Goody goody…tear down the wall and expose the concrete.

Now the basement resembles the effect of a tactical nuclear device.

The contractor says, “thank goodness for insurance” rubbing his hands together.

Nope, policy specifically omits water and wind since I had a claim 7 years ago.

My son, his wife and their daughter come for a visit while this is all going on.

Day one, direct flight from LA is cancelled, rebooked the next day via Chicago.

Next day flight delayed…result bags didn’t make it.

I give them the Tesla to go and visit friends in Owl’s head. The twelve-volt Battery dies. I go to Tesla to arrange service.

Our warranty expired August 23.

Now I must have a flatbed truck go to Owl’s head to pick up the car and bring it to Quebec City or Montreal.

Son takes a day and finds and fixes the battery problem. Two days of their visit kaput!

Sally has eye surgery scheduled at 11 am in Chateguay on Monday. Don’t ask why Chateguay. I take off Monday morning to drive her to places I have never seen in my life and after driving down a dirt road come across the clinic where a surgeon nick named “OOPS” by her nurses performs. Park and go to check in.

Ten Indians all squinting, are waiting their turn. The receptionist says Hmmmm we don’t have you scheduled in fact we have no record of you.

Lovely drive back home and Sally remembers another eye clinic in Pointe Claire. Maybe that one?! So, I drive there and sure enough they have a requisition that Sally brings out to the car. Unfortunately, this was for a procedure 6 months ago. They don’t do cataracts.

Back home.  Oh well a half blind wife is better than no wife. I will make do.

Meanwhile back at the ranch I have arranged to borrow a car as our marriage contract has wheels for Sally 7/24 365 days per year. As I’m waiting to be picked up the owner leaving her driveway rips the front bumper off her car. So, Billy has no wheels.

I don’t want to bore you Jim , but would you please register these 10 days with your superiors up there wherever you are and ask them to open a file called “Shit Show”. No more of these please.

Dear Jim: I need your help.

Well, Jimbo a big birthday today. Getting closer to being able to shoot my age in golf!

I wanted to ask you if you ever get to see the golf god’s department up there.

I have a question for them.

When they suddenly take away 20 yards of distance from each of your clubs without notice is there a ceremony?

Do they issue a certificate or are they just fooling around and springing it on unsuspecting goof balls who can’t understand what happened? Must be a sport for them!

Let me know what you can find out and tell them I am going to raise hell when I get there.

The very first game of golf I played in 1980 I shot 111. Now, 2000 games and thousands of dollars of lessons, golf schools and practice sessions, 44 years later, I shoot 111.

Who dreams up a sport like this?

This is a waste of a lifetime. No?

Oh yes, forgive me, I forgot.

It is so nice to be outside and enjoy the weather and the friends, blah, blah, blah.

Couldn’t someone have issued safety warnings in my 30’s about this?

At any rate, my short game now begins with the 3 wood. My pitches could be considered for a comedy routine and my sand game…oh boy, my sand game! I did get out once in the past 11 games. I sculled it beautifully and it went 30 yards past the green, but I was out. Other than that, after lessons from pros and frustrated playing mates I can move the ball 2 feet or so. Much better than not moving it at all but murder in a large trap.

I am now keeping score in my head. I only must multiply the number of holes by 7. Easy because I’m only taking 7’s before I pick up on the par 4’s, 8 on the par 5’s and 6 on the par 3’s.

I am losing 6-12 balls per round on the Blue course because I am stubborn and extremely stupid. I can get over the water from here...yes I can, yes I can, oops, crap, I have to get another ball.

I have a spot on 14 Blue where I hit my drive into the water every time, I tee it up. This has only been going on for 3 years and like Lucy pulling the ball away from Charlie Brown I keep going for it.

A 6-foot circle marks the spot and even if I aim to the right trees, it goes straight as an arrow to the left water beside the red stake…no I’m not exaggerating. When I hit, my partners don’t even look. They just shout “water!!” and carry on ignoring me.

My next stop is Costco to buy Kirkland golf balls at $2 each and keep my Pro V1’s in my closet at home. That way they may last me the season.

So, if you have any clout with the management where you are, please tell them that I am ready.

Take me now...please.

Dear Jim: The hearing aids you never wore!!

 Dear Jim:

I remember well in those final years how you didn’t hear or understand most of what I had to say but it never bothered me. I was able to repeat my stories over and over and you were always entertained.

Recently, I had a wake-up call, orchestrated by Sally that suggested I might require an assist with my hearing.

Over dinner she had said “Louise went out for dinner” and I replied, “She went to Greece?

Now I thought it was an honest mistake since, as usual. I wasn’t paying much attention, but the subsequent conversation sent me off to get hearing aids.

I did a complete survey of all the old geezers I know who have struggled with their hearing and received absolutely no information that was at all useful. Seems there are dozens of models, manufacturers, and theories about what is the best solution.

Some people who haven’t understood a word I have said to them for years swore up and down that their approach was the best.

Ok, off I went and after an intensive process I walked out with $8000 devices that were going to change my life. The only change I’ve noticed so far is that I have less money in my account than I did before.

I was told I could return them for full refund in 30 days. (I am checking off my calendar every morning, so I don’t miss the deadline.)

First, you must promise that for the first 2 weeks you will wear them for at least 5 hours per day. That probably doesn’t seem like a long time. Right?

Have you ever watched a clock for 5 hours. It is forever!

When the 4hr and 59-minute mark arrives, I can’t rip those suckers out of my ears fast enough.

I thought noisy restaurants or gatherings were the perfect venue for me as I do have trouble sometimes.

Nope, if I had read the instructions, I would have noted that “do not use in noisy environments” means everywhere that I would like to have clear input.

The first night I went out for dinner I felt like I was in an orchestra pit with the waiters’ playing cymbals and the other patrons randomly screaming and yelling while they banged their plates with knives and forks.

My head was vibrating for hours.  I’m not sure there isn’t permanent damage.

They claim there is a setting that blocks out background noise. They don’t tell you it blocks out all noise and you are essentially deaf.

I know, I know you are thinking why not just take them out. Well, you must keep them in a special case which I have difficulty remembering to bring with me, so I have nowhere to keep them.

Here is the summary.

No good in noisy settings restaurants, meetings, parties.

Don’t need them one on one.

Don’t need them on the phone, just turn up the volume a tad.

Turn the TV up a bit and there is no problem.

Driving doesn’t require anything.

Sally sounds twice as loud over dinner. Not necessarily a plus.

True enough I do hear noises that were not apparent to me before. For example, any flowing water from any source makes me think I’m in a Maid of the Mist tour of Niagara Falls. Every creak of my car's suspension makes me think I’m driving a 1963 Russian Lada. I can hear the squeaking of my cords as I walk.

In other words, all the things I couldn’t hear before and have no interest in hearing now!!

I have only finished week one and I will keep going until 30 days are up for sure just in case there is a magic moment coming up.

The purpose of this note is a warning that if you see me this summer and I don’t respond to you when you say something, please don’t take it personally. I will be doing my best!

 Dear Jim: A Barbados holiday

Dear Jim:

Safety tips if you are thinking of  driving in Barbados.

Hi there Jimbo, I have evidence that you are watching over me. Thank you.

On our recent trip to Barbados, I decided to rent a car rather than taking Taxis. This, even though as you know I probably shouldn’t be driving at home let alone in a strange place.

I cleverly calculated that I could save $8 USD by renting rather than take a Taxi to the west coast to do a few things and visit friends over a two-day period.

Many years ago, we always rented in Barbados, and I drove everywhere at high speed on the wrong side of the road. Oh sure, there were many close calls especially during the times when I was drinking and driving at night in the rain, but no one died.

You know I have a fabulous memory, especially for long ago. I knew my way about the roundabouts and all the little, short cuts in my head as we set off from our hotel. Unfortunately, the people living there have been building and rerouting and adding all kinds of stuff. I didn’t recognize a single landmark!  I had also forgotten that my eye-hand coordination is no longer coordinating, especially at high speed.

Good thing Barbados is an island so, when you see a sign that says “Guadeloupe” straight ahead you know you are on the wrong road, and you can quickly recover.

My adjustment to driving on the wrong side of the road was not great either and I went off the road a bit where I scraped my front tire and mayber the front fender and bumper. I later claimed it was a hit and run in the parking lot as I didn’t want to embarrass myself. The damage couldn’t be hidden and I’m waiting for the Rental Company to have a hissy fit about the cost to repair.

Waze said we were 37 minutes from our destination and an hour and half later we arrived in Holetown. Parking was packed but we left the car. I should have taken a picture of it before we left for the shops as it was very hard to find later.

On the way back to the hotel on Day 1 we missed the roundabout to the ocean road. They are clever little devils. On one side the Roundabout says Grahame Hall and on the other side Errol Barrow. At any rate we missed all four times we headed home. BTW, Wives shouldn’t be allowed to criticize a driver in motion is all I can say. Very off-putting.

On day two, after a great visit to our friend’s spectacular home, we took off to have dinner with them at the Cliff. Sally in his car and his wife in mine in case we got lost. Unfortunately, thinking I was signalling a turn I hit the windshield wiper button and since the wiper was shredded it smeared goop all over the windshield making it impossible, yes impossible to see. There are no lights on the highway and the oncoming headlights are blinding enough as it is.

My friend insisted we pull over and get a taxi, but I couldn’t make out what she was saying in between the shrieks of terror after one close call after another. By the time we got to the restaurant she was still shaking and immediately ordered a martini. I fortunately had a change of underwear in the car.

When we left in the dark and headed home to our hotel, I assumed we would probably die that night.

I would have left the car, but I wouldn’t have known how to describe where it was. Finally, we arrived at the hotel, parked the car, and left the keys at the front desk. I immediately cancelled my credit card and moved our room so I couldn’t be found. My $8 savings is now around $1000 extra. Hopefully.

Never again! First, I doubt they will rent to me.

Second, the police have a picture of us and have instructions to stop on sight.

For all those Barbarians who were traumatized by our two-day reign of terror all over the island I apologize.

Dear Jim: Nobody cares.

Dear Jim: You used to care…I miss that.

Have you noticed that no one cares anymore?

It seems that Whining has lost its ability to find empathy with friends and family. Can’t figure it.

Take golf for example.

Me: “My game is terrible. I am having a terrible time. Can’t seem to fix anything.”

Partner: You won’t believe I shot an 84 yesterday. Hit my drives a mile and let me tell you about my chip in on 17…”

Me: “All my short puts seem to be going to the right.”

Partner:” Did you get the score card from the starter?”

Me: “My left arm just fell off.”

Partner: “Want me to drive the cart?”

Not to say I am innocent. One of my golf partners has neck vertebrae that are kaput. He solemnly gave me the news last week.

I told him to not turn his head when I’m putting because the clicking noise will throw me off.

Now, I am dealing with some potentially serious medical issues.

My eyesight has deteriorated quite a bit in the past year. After all the tests etc. I’m told there is nothing that can be done…too bad…so sad.

So, I go to Dr Google and discover that there is a magnifying glass that you keep on your head and swing it around when you need to see something.

I explained this to my son with fear in my voice.

He said: Dad, I promise you we will get you the best magnifying glass they make.”

I then went downstairs and told Sally about this frightening turn of events.

She looked at me and said: Do you want meatballs with your pasta sauce tonight or would you like it just plain?”

It seems I am going to have to go to my doctor to get a paper signed for my driver licence renewal. Besides failing vision, my hearing isn’t what it used to be and my doctor thinks being able to hear a train whistle is important.

Doctor:” Good morning, what can I do for you today.

Me:” What?I beg your pardon….

I’m doomed.

Me losing my driver’s licence for being deaf and having fuzzy vision will make a few people sit up and take notice.

Yes, it is true I miss a few stop signs and pesky red lights and staying within those lane markers is requiring more skill than I am used too but I still get from A to B. My passengers aren’t as relaxed at the end of the journey but if they want to drive, they could take their own car.

I will have to register Sally as an Uber driver for income splitting purposes. And she won’t like it much. I have places to go, people to do and things to meet… every day.

This won’t end well.

So, there you have it. I hope things stabilize but, I am going to interview 75-pound German Shepard’s in case I need a new friend. Ooh, rats,  I hate dogs.

Moral of this letter, Jim, is that you may as well say nothing and drop dead quietly when it is your turn.

People will say: “You know Bill never complained…amazing.

Missing you

 Dear Jim: A depressing report.

Normally I don’t give an early season report on Golf but since I will probably be quitting soon, I thought I should get this off to you now.

Now in the off chance that you and your buddies wherever you hang out up there are screwing with my game for giggles you need to back off…NOW.

My swing is gone. I am so embarrassed I had to drop out of a great Wednesday afternoon group since I didn’t want the pity that I knew they would feel if I joined them.

I have had a lesson. The instructor said I could have a follow-up, but he would have to wear a mask. I told him Covid on the golf course is a non-issue.

“Oh, I don’t mean a medical mask I meant a hood with eye holes so no one would know who was teaching you.”

This wasn’t funny but he was serious. Apparently, the pro shop has my picture in the back office with a “do not engage” warning on it.

I spent a few hours on Youtube Monday morning on getting out of sand traps.

Six different instructors with six totally different approaches on every aspect.

All of them worked…. for them. Easy Peasy.

So off I went this morning and planted myself and 50 balls in the practice trap.

First drill was to hit only the sand with no ball in front of you. After a few minutes of this I had so much sand in my shoes and hair that I couldn’t see straight.

Moving on to hitting with a balI, I used all the tips the Youtube bozos showed me.

When I finally got one ball on the green, I was sweating so hard that I thought I would faint from dehydration.

The balls that I skulled 50 yards are gone forever and the one’s I hit 18 inches are probably not reusable. Sorry.

This is a work in progress.

I have decided to remove my driver from the bag. It goes the same distance as my 8 iron so why carry two clubs that give you the same distance?

My slightly over the top swing is now a serious of two or three separate and uncoordinated pieces (not sure because I can’t see or feel what I’m doing).

The bad news is that I’m losing balls so often that I’m having trouble keeping the bag stocked enough for a complete round.

The reason for the lost balls is that none of the people I’m playing with will watch my shot for fear they will become infected with whatever virus is in my brain.

I often turn and say, “did anyone see where that went”. The answer is always “we will drive down the left side of the fairway and you go down the right. We have no idea where it went.”

So, you get the idea. Now on Saturday I’m playing in a tournament where 8 randomly chosen members team up and play as a team. Sounds like a 3-ring circus, right?

Well, all I know for sure is that after that game there will be 7 more people that I can’t look in the eye at Royal Montreal.

There will have to be some ground rules.

No swearing…..at me!

No laughing, no picture taking, no talking with comments like “don’t worry Bill it will come back.”

Coming from strangers this is not helpful. I assume we are paired male/female with someone I probably don’t know.  So, the humiliation will be complete. Don’t ask me why we are doing this, but I was told it wasn’t optional.

Next week could be my last week of golf, not for the season, forever!

I will keep you posted.

Dear Jim: Ok ,back in the groove

It has almost been a year since you died and so far no contact with you from wherever you told me you were going. As a result I have not bothered to write a Dear Jim letter but demand has been increasing so pay attention.

People always ask you how your winter was: Well here’s the story,.

During the winter every friend, acquaintance and some  people we don’t particularly care for, go  South for the season. That leaves Sally and I alone with almost nobody to play with.

To escape in January , we went to Barbados for a couple of weeks on the Beach.

Once again all alone, just the two of us , no one else , just 56 years of marriage. Together, every moment, 42 meals staring in to each others eyes. Got the picture?

Now I am fully trained but there are very few fine points that need tuning every now and then. After the first week these items are cleared away and our conversation from there is fairly short.

“Hurry up, what are you doing, I’m going for a walk on the beach, I need a drink, Oh for Christ’s sakes relax,  etc etc. “

By the 12th day I’m calling Air Canada to see how much it would cost to change our ticket home.

Day 14 can’t come soon enough and we are at the airport 4 hours before departure to make sure nothing will stop us from making that flight. So that is January.

During February I spend most of my free time trying to decide where to go in February. This is an impossible task and before you know it, March has arrived. Now it is March Break and going somewhere makes no sense which brings us to April. Well Ok Then, snow gone, golf club starting to look inviting, days lengthening and decision is made to go to Florida Next year and le voila winter’s over and golf season looms large.

So today was opening day at the golf club and I didn’t make any effort to register. I did however go out to the club, changed into my golf clothes, shoes and all and walked around the 19th hole pretending that I was there to play. Talked to a lot of nice people and everyone told me to play well. If I had had to play 18 holes I would have needed an ambulance to take me home.

I haven’t hit a ball for months so I went out to hit a couple…and I mean a couple.

My first swing, had I made it during the event, might have  caused pieces of my body to break off and would have been very embarrassing.

I realized I have to change my warm up this year.

For example I will not be able to practice with my Driver this year  because every time I bent down to tee up another ball it was 15-20 seconds before my dizzy spell subsided.

I think passing out on the range might elicit gossip about me that I would be uncomfortable dealing with so the Driver stays in the bag.

Hard to believe you can get a blister on your right hand by only hitting 20.. 8 irons.

Could be my grip which has gotten quite tight as I fight off a wonderful Shank that appears out of nowhere every second shot.

You get the picture. I am ready to roll for 2023 and will keep you up to date as I continue to improve. Golf is my Life.

Regards,

Bill

And another thing

 Dear Jim:

Well let me try again. Perhaps your sister (the NUN..true) can get this letter to you with her connections.

In answer to my health and general well-being I can report that my deterioration is progressing at an aggressive pace.

My doctor informs me that the extra 10 years of life that I should expect from not smoking, no drinking, lots of exercise, 10 hours nightly sleep and weight control are over.

Congratulations!

And I’m now on the same life expectancy schedule as the Overweight, heavy smoking, big drinking insomniacs.

I find I need to change a few of my habits.

For example, I used to put on my socks standing on one foot and deftly pullng on a sock with both hands.

Lately, I find I tend to lose my balance and careen across the room either falling outright or ploughing into a dresser or whatever.

Now if this continues, I could face serious injury or death.

Imagine an OBIT that says ..” Bill Meder died this morning of blunt force trauma while putting on his socks.”

 Humiliating right?

I am having problems with my memory. Not losing it. Just the opposite. Digital quality recall of everything back to 4 years old. This is a painful and depressing  problem.

I remember clearly playing squash every day and sometimes twice for 45 minutes each game. I tried to warm up in a court a while ago and after the warmup I went straight home for a snooze.

I remember riding my bike for one hour after work around the end of the island. Seldom missed a day. I just sold my bike because I kept falling off sideways when my feet got stuck in the pedals. Ouch.

I remember when I could carry my golf bag for 18 holes. Now I need help lifting the bag on to the cart.

I remember loving to ski for hours even when it was minus 25F. I can’t go skiing anymore because I’m afraid of getting my nose cold.

I remember quite fondly the frosty martini glass with the twist of lemon moving across the room towards me. Now it’s “will that be flat or sparkling”. Terrible, no?

I remember hitting from the white tees, looking longingly at the blues.

Now I hit from the red tees looking longingly at the Ladies yellow tees. Brutal.

I used to drive at high speed, steering with my knee while I typed a lengthy text.

I now drive very slow with both hands tightly gripping the wheel praying that I won’t blow by a stop sign or red light and kill myself or someone else.

I will probably stop driving either by losing my licence or death. It’s 50/50

I could go on, but you get it.

Running, jumping, bobbing, weaving, twisting, twirling, leaping, agile, fast, quick, alert, motor skills etc. etc. can nevermore be used in a sentence that begins with Bill. Depressing right?

Now I’m not complaining. Just reporting. In the future I will write to you about all the things I’m still good at if anything comes to mind.

Dear Jim: Rules of Engagement

 Dear Jim: Rules of Engagement

After much reflection I think we should establish the protocol  for our regular games. I detect some angst around the subjects of conversation before, during and after the game.
I propose the following for consideration.

No mention of the stock market, individual stocks, ups and downs.
Included is the  failure to recognize the worries of those less fortunate who may be experiencing large losses, or extreme happiness at a bluebird that arrives during the game via Yahoo or reflection on some position that has turned out well. No checking of market performance during the game.

If someone is "on" and hitting great shot after great shot it isn't necessary to say "great shot "after every hit for 18 holes.
A maximum of 3 "great shots" per player per round is sufficient. Same for "nice putt".

Gossip is only permitted if all three of us know the target and don't like them. This is best used before or after the game but in case we are backed up it can be used to pass the time between holes.

It is clear no one cares about the other person's game. This includes the current game and/or  any reminiscence of previous games.
Also, it isn't necessary to say " I topped it, I sculled it, I didn't get under it, I sliced it, I hooked it, oh boy etc etc etc.
We all saw the shot and no description of the boo boo is necessary.

If we agree to speak only when spoken too,the silence could be offputting.
I reserve the right to speak when I feel like it and by not responding in anyway this will be the signal to be quiet. I will do my best.

Hitting out of turn will be be frowned upon unless the person who is away is needlessly fucking around with his bag, club selection or just taking too long in the loo.
It is acknowledged that driving ahead of the person hitting next, although annoying, is a mental issue that may require treatment. We will see how this progresses through the season.

Restaurants,  dining experience, trips, past or upcoming, weather, wind, cart performance or personal compliments are all fair conversation at any time.

I hope this clarification will improve our wonderful experience every tuesday and thursday. Any additions or deletions are accepted of course in the spirit of unity.

See you all on tuesday

Dear Jim: As the days dwindle down the time machine is speeding up

Dear Jim:

Someone has put a speed chip into the time machine.

I just woke up to realize that it is going to be August 1 any minute now. How did that happen?

During the winter every day seemed like a week, and we could hardly wait for summer. Along comes June…cold, rainy and there goes July, hot hot. In the blink of an eye.

You do know that the leaves start to change in three weeks! I know, I know Sept and Oct can be great but at the speed we are going it will be November in a minute and it all starts again.

I have started to realize that this faster cycle is causing non fixable changes to my quality of life.

I am now going to go for a year-to-year car rental. How can I buy a car that may last seven or so years?

I have passengers who don’t think I should be driving now. What are the odds that I should be driving six or seven years from now?

It wasn't long ago that I would have breakfast meetings  at the Ritz at 7am followed by a second one at 8. I now have trouble making an 8 am zoom call from home usually with my face blurred to hide my, deer caught in the headlights, look I sport at that time of day.

I used to go to bed at 11 pm and up and at’em at 7 am or earlier. No more.

In the winter it is pitch black out at 4 pm so I don’t feel guilty going up to bed at 8 pm..lights out at 9. In the summer I feel guilty doing that so we put in black out blinds so we can pretend it is late while the whole neighbourhood is walking up and down the road long after we are gone to the world.

I used to do fifty things a day.

Now, by noon the most I can say is I went to the bank or went and bought a take- out dinner.

Don’t know why it took me all morning. No rational explanation so don’t ask what is taking so long.

I would get out of bed at 7 am to take an 8 am flight to Toronto.  Now I have to get up at 5.30 am to make a 9.30 tee time at the golf club. No explanation makes sense.

I used to walk up and down the stairs with a coffee cup in one hand and my iPad in the other. I noticed the other day that I now grab the banister with both hands going up or down. Didn’t even see it coming.

When I was drinking it was normal to be   a little bit unsteady at the end of the night.

Now I wobble every time I get up after sitting for 15 minutes. And when did the dizziness start when I make a fast move. Don’t know. Just began….

My hearing may be getting weaker. I have always been good at ignoring instructions but now I don’t seem to catch all the tidbits that I’m interested in hearing. I nod as if I got it…getting good at faking it.

I have closed captions on all my TV shows and love reading the Netflix movies when we watch TV. The sound is so high that we haven’t had any wildlife within 300 yards of the house this year.

People close to me seem to be shouting most of the time or this just my imagination?

I didn’t swim when the pool was heated to 70 degrees F and now, I don’t swim when it is set at 90 degrees.

You get the picture; nothing is the same and certainly not going to get any better. The slow downhill slide seems to have picked up speed. This isn’t going to end well….

Dear Jim: Ok, I got the message

 Dear Jim:

I know I told you to send me a sign when you arrived to wherever you are. I didn’t mean you had to get into my golf swing and start messing with it as a sign that you were connected with me.

I have never hit a shank in golf in my life and yesterday I didn’t hit anything else for an hour.

I tried everything and couldn’t fix it until finally I said to myself...” It’s Jim” just letting me know!

I went out today and sure enough everything was back to normal.

Ok then, I confirm we are now connected…no more signs S.V.P

And by the way it was a nice touch making me “co-executor” of your estate, instead of “one of” the executors. This way I get to sign every document, approve every action, and learn first-hand the probate procedures in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Florida combined with my now useless knowledge of Quebec rules and procedures.

You did know you live in a different province than me…right?

Who knew I would be getting to meet a whole raft of new legal friends and banking acquaintances with “yes, but” following every question or suggestion I make?

I had wondered what I was going to do in my spare time this year and you single handidly solved that problem for me with the little “Co” addition to your will. Nice touch…I’ll bet you did that on purpose. That’s what friends are for.

It was also a nice addition to see that you had ignored all my suggestions earlier this year about winding up your company and selling your vacation home in Antigonish. This allows me to dig deep into the tax consequences in three provinces and two countries. Hells bells, I am going to be an expert before this is done and can probably get consulting gigs.

And finally, when I asked you to get rid of all those joint accounts it must have been after you lost your hearing, and now I get to watch your money grow all over the banking system for the many months I will spend getting those accounts closed.

I have always said you were a special friend and you have come through with an exclamation point! For certain I'm not going to forget you any time soon.

Enjoy yourself, you have a front row seat.

Bill Meder
